This article describes one aspect of the stepper motor protection circuit that I designed for Abbott Instrument Development System. Stepper Motor Circuit Breaker describes the complete circuit. The entire description is too long for a simple design note and the novel upside down use of a linear regulator is a worthwhile topic in its own right.
